The article is devoted to the development of modern urban space. The processes influencing the representation of the modern city are determined. Thus, globalization processes "modernize" the city under pressure from domestic and foreign investors, new business structures, short-sighted selfish politicians and the chaotic nature of market relations of transformational development, and the existing picture of settlement is changing. The attractiveness of the largest cities from the standpoint of increasing urbanization, the concentration of investment resources and the accumulation of industrial, financial and business centers in them today causes debate and is not unambiguously reflected in the well-being and comfort of human living.
Most cities are in need of updating methodological approaches to their development with a focus on improving the quality of the urban environment and improving the living conditions of the population. The article examines the definitions of the quality of the urban environment, and also examines the existing approaches to the transformation and use of urban areas.
The expediency of considering the city not only within their administrative boundaries, but together with the adjacent territories, defining the zone of influence from the city has been substantiated.
Proposals are formulated for the spatial development of the urban environment and the creation of a comfortable environment for human life. The proposed proposals make it possible to comprehensively solve the issues of spatial development of territories, which will make it possible to rationally and effectively use them. This will make it possible to objectively assess the state of settlements within the framework of the regional settlement system and provide proposals for effective development and management.
