Registration of CA 4003 and CA 4004 Cotton Germplasm Lines with Improved Fiber Quality Profiles and Yarn Properties

Market value and competitiveness of cotton ( Gossypium hirsutum L.) fibers are dependent on fiber quality and how it relates to the quality of end products such as yarn. Improving multiple fiber properties that affect spinning performance and yarn quality is a fundamental objective of the Texas A&M AgriLife Research cotton breeding program in Lubbock, TX. CA 4003 (Reg. No. GP‐988, PI 674104) and CA 4004 (Reg. No. GP‐989, PI 674105) are upland cotton germplasm lines that were developed as part of a specific breeding effort that focused on improving fiber properties measured by both the high volume instrument and the advanced fiber information system with special emphasis being placed on fiber length distribution. CA 4003 and CA 4004 were both longer and stronger, with higher length uniformity and lower short fiber content, than both commercial checks. The fiber quality profile of these lines resulted in carded yarns that had better tensile properties and lower coefficient of variation than comparable yarns produced from commercial checks. CA 4003 and CA 4004 also produced a significantly lower percentage of noils waste during combed yarn production. These germplasm lines are valuable sources that possess both raw fiber and finished product traits to address fiber market and the textile industry requirements.
