Registration of ‘Antonio’, a Very Early Maturing and High Yielding U.S. Conventional Long Grain Rice Cultivar

‘Antonio’ (Reg. No. CV‐145, PI 667755) is a very early maturing conventional, long‐grain rice ( Oryza sativa L.) cultivar derived from a cross of ‘Cypress’ and ‘Cocodrie’, two very popular rice cultivars in Texas during the past 15 yr. Antonio has agronomic traits comparable to Cocodrie but has higher main crop yield and milling potential. Yield trials conducted in Texas showed a 9 and 5% main crop yield advantage over Cocodrie and ‘Presidio’, respectively. Antonio has comparable percentage total milled rice but generally higher whole grain milling yield (head rice) than Cocodrie. Antonio was bred for production in Texas but performed equally well in most southern U.S. rice‐growing regions. It is nonaromatic with intermediate apparent amylose content, low alkali spreading value, and intermediate gel type; it is a premium quality conventional U.S. long grain rice. It is resistant to several races of rice blast ( Pyricularia oryzae ), intermediate to bacterial panicle blight ( Burkholderia glumae ) the major disease observed in 2010, and susceptible to sheath blight ( Rhizoctonia solani ), like most U.S. released cultivars. It has moderate resistance to neck blast ( P. oryzae ), leaf smut ( Entyloma oryzae ), narrow brown leaf spot ( Cercospora janseana ), and brown spot ( Cochliobolus miyabeanus ) but is susceptible to the physical disorder straighthead. It has a disease package comparable to Cocodrie.
