Registration of Tx3362 Sorghum Germplasm

The sorghum [ Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] germplasm Tx3362 (Reg. No. GP‐730, PI 666120) was developed and released by the Texas AgriLife Research sorghum breeding program in January 2012. This germplasm line is unique because the pericarp of the grain is essentially black when the plants are grown in normal field conditions. The dark color results in very high levels of 3‐deoxyanthocyanins in the pericarp of the grain, and this class of compounds has been classified as an antioxidant. Therefore, the grain of Tx3362 has potential use and application as a natural colorant and source of antioxidants. Because these compounds are present in the pericarp, they are easily concentrated by simply decorticating the grain and collecting the resulting bran. Tx3362 sorghum germplasm can be used as a line per se to produce grains rich in 3‐deoxyanthocyanins or as a breeding parent to produce additional lines with this unique characteristic.
