USDA 21272M (Reg. No. GP‐34, PI 664286) was released to the public on 6 Dec. 2011. This germplasm has been utilized by USDA‐ARS for hop ( Humulus lupulus L. var. lupulus ) varietal development for several decades. Nonagency interest in this germplasm was expressed and release of this material is considered beneficial for the U.S. public. USDA 21272M originated as a cross, performed by USDA‐ARS at Corvallis, OR in 1973, between the hop cultivar Northern Brewer and male accession USDA 21110M. The unique characteristics of this germplasm are demonstrated superior breeding value as well as moderate resistance to downy mildew. USDA 21272M is used primarily as a male parent for α‐type hop variety development. The release of USDA 21272M will provide both public and private breeders with new germplasm for varietal development.
