The message of the Annales Bertiniani of 839 about the ambassadorsof the Khakan Rhos was repeatedly analyzed, but researchers did not come to a conclusion about the location of this ruler’s headquarters. Rhos emerged from a simplistic view of the history of the Circumbaltic space, where the Scandinavians were just one element of a complex interethnic process. Written and archaeological sources, as well as toponymy data, indicate that the Rhos people may be localized outside mainland Sweden – on the Baltic islands and the Eastern Baltic.
