Some of Sumarokov’s works were based on foreign, especially French poems, although they can by no means be called direct transcriptions. The article deals primarily with the elegy Prestan’te vy, glaza, drazhaisheiu prel’shchat’sia («Cease, the Eyes, being Fascinated by the Dearest one») which owes many of its features to the anonymous French elegy «Forced Separation» (1658). The paper offers insights into the poetic and rhetorical techniques that Sumarokov had borrowed; attention is drawn to Petrarchist topos and the use of precise rhetoric in his elegies.
