The article analyzes an unknown note by Leskov «On the Yukhantsev Clock» (1888, The Day newspaper) as a possible plot source for the stories The Improvisers and The Choice Grain. The comparative analysis of the discovered note and the stories in question leads to certain conclusions regarding their relationship, and points to the interpenetration of journalistic and artistic writing in the writer’s work.
