
Towards the Defi nition of «Philological Translation» of the 1930s: How M. L. Lozinsky’s Translation of Benvenuto Cellini’s "La Vita" Is Made

The article analyzes drafts and preparatory materials for Mikhail Lozinsky’s translation of Benvenuto Cellini’s "La Vita" (1931), preserved in the translator’s archive. The specifics of Lozinsky’s essentially philological approach to the translation of this prose work written in the dialect of Florentine 16th century volgolies, is the fact that, benefi ting from the analysis of Cellini’s style in the works by Karl Vossler, Lozinsky had subjected his complete draft translation to scrupulous retrospective analysis, aimed at achieving systematic exactitude in reproducing the dominant of Cellini’s style — his syntactic solecisms. Materials of the «translator’s workshop» open up the path to the academic description of Lozinsky’s translation method.
