The article discusses the newly discovered manuscript of I. S. Turgenev’s short story "The Brigadier", kept at Harvard, which turns out to be the fi rst fair copy with corrections and revisions, handwritten by the author from the rough draft (BNF) and later used for producing the second (typeset) fair copy (IRLI). Comprehensive study of the full set of The Brigadier’s manuscripts, as well as the analysis of all the revisions in the Harvard copy, contributes to the understanding of the genesis of the story, and allows to improve the literary commentary in Turgenev’s Complete Works.
