The author considers written and archaeological evidence on beaver fur and pelts in Rus. The analysis of this evidence makes it possible to resolve some differences and contradictions in conclusions of historians, who wrote that the beaver disappeared in most of East Europe as early as the Old Russian period. The findings of this paper concur with the conclusions reached by the archaeologist M. V. Fekhner and zoologist V. N. Skalon that, since ancient times, people in different regions of Russia took measures to protect local populations of beavers.
