This paper considers the history of studying ceramic stamps in Russia within the two pre-war decades of 1921–1941. It was during this period that ceramic stamps of two North Black Sea manufacturing centres, i.e. Herakleia Pontike and Sinope, were identified and the data were collected for IOSPE. vol. III which is the basis of modern investigations on ceramic epigraphy in Russia and abroad.
