This article is devoted to archon Hygiainon known by coins and tile stamps as the archon of Bosporus. According to available sources of information he ruled at the beginning of the 2nd century BC. The ar- ticle’s author believes that Hygiainon could be a member of the Spartocid dynasty. He was elected as an archon at Panticapaeum where he had his permanent residence. One of the last of the Spartocids and the legitimate king of Bosporus ruled all over the kingdom, but against the risk of а Sarmatian invasion he allowed Hygiainon to rule European Bosporus to strengthen a defensive capability of the capital and its countryside, gather an army and unite with Scythian kings of Tauris against a Sarmatian threat. From his coins we know that Hygiainon reached success in this field and managed to secure a military victory which strengthened military and political influence of Bosporan kings. It is reflected in an image of Athena Nicephorus on king’s golden staters.
