The article focuses on innovative approaches and experimental technologies in contemporary art practices. The use of the artistic and scientific experiment in visual art and design is considered using the works of leading contemporary art groups as an example. Generalization, systematization, and comparison allow to view the artistic and scientific experiment as a form of contemporary art practices; art description and analysis of experimental art projects allow to identify the features of the artistic and scientific approachto the creative activities, its main principles and results. Analysis of the conceptual and categorical framework of experimental artistic and cross-sectoral practices of contemporary art was carried out, as well as identification of artistic and scientific experiment as an innovative technology within the science-oriented art. Artistic and scientific experiment is one of the leading innovative approachesin contemporary art. Its cross-sectoral nature provides considerable opportunities for the development of contemporary art practices. Projects, installations and art objects created as a result of artistic and scientific experiment, in addition to their own artistic value, have a significant impact on the development of related sectors, on the formation of ideas about the future and on change or adjustment of the general socio-cultural attitude to innovation. The art projects of the Festo laboratory, of the Mediated Matter group, of Theo Jansen, and Benatz Farahi are the examples of artistic and scientific experiment. They demonstrate cross-sectoral orientationof the work, use of design, system approach, introduction of the latest technological solutions, formation of the techno-image, metabolic metaphors and experimental nature of the activities
