The object of research is the genre features of key works in the history of the global (including Ukrainian) art history, theirfunctions and addressees. The subject of research is the function and, consequently, the genre of art research in the historical dimension. The metaphorical definition of the subject ofresearch isinspired by the title of the novel Foundation and Empire by Isaac Asimov, which reveals the conflict between the global tendency of the Empire to absorb and the desire of art history to preserve its sovereignty considering its role in the national culture. The collision of this system and the latest academic standards is revealed by determining the logical chain from the art of cybercommunism to the formula of art and cultural scenarios in which the art object is represented, as well as the genres of art research, which ensured their functioning until recently. Therefore, the question of finding the solutionto the problem of the function of art history in modern society israised once again. After all, the function generates the method, which,in turn, forms the genre. Some provisions of this publication were specified in 2020 at the conferences “Problems of Methodologyof Contemporary Art History and Cultural Studies” and “Culture. Art. Education. Relevant Polylogue” at the Modern Art ResearchInstitute.
