The basic thesis of this paper is that integration processes in Europe have not only failed to introduce democracy at the EU level, but also hampered the functioning of democracy in the member states. This has led to the crisis of democracy in Europe. It is an example of maturing, long-term crisis, essentially stemming from elitist profile of the integration processes. The crisis of democracy in Europe has became even more apparent during the difficult economic situation after 2008.
