The economic crisis of 2008 made economic weaknesses of the member states of the European Union evident. It also impacted the perception of values which hold its states and societies together. It is the aim of this paper to analyse the axological tension between solidarity and neoliberalism surfaced by the economic crisis. Different axiological perspectives based on the two ideologies present beneficiaries and cost bearers of the crisis as free riders. A philosophical reflection on the background and opportunities of overcoming this tension is important as its continuation may limit the integrative processes.
