The period of the 1860s became the time of experiments in the eld of armed force creation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, for instance, there were formed bashi-bazouks units made up of the local Muslims. There were also projects aimed at increasing the number of Islamic combatants through transfer of the Circassians from the Caucuses to Bosnia. Attempts to organise border guard detachments made up of Bosnian Christians were made too. The article deals with the implementation of these projects and is based on Russian diplomatic reports.
