Adam Mickiewicz, a revolutionary and a democrat, was actively involved in the political activities of the Polish emigration in the 1830s–1850s.Calling to consolidate the struggle of the Poles for national independence and the liberation movement of European nations, Mickiewicz became a prominent figure of the «Peoples’ Spring» of 1848–1849: He founded the international revolutionary newspaper «La Tribune des Peuples». The Mickiewicz Legion (also known as the Polish Legion) fought for freedom of the peoples in Italy, Germany, Hungary and other European countries. During the Crimean War (1853–1856), Mickiewicz sought to use the international situation to support the struggle of the Polish people against tsarism. In order to do it, he negotiated with different groups in Paris and then in Constantinople, where he died in 1855.
