The author considers the specifics of conducting field research in areas with a dif ficult sociolinguistic situation on the example of the field research in the Polish-Belarusian transborder, on the territory of the former parish of Usnar. The paper offers for discussion such methods as: the use of archival materials for the study of historical multilingualism; verification of the dialect lexemes extracted from the archives documents during field expeditions; use of museum objects as tools for obtaining unique oral historys as well as new dialect material.
