Training to meet the needs of the communicatively impaired population of South Africa: A project of the University of the Witwatersrand

At a time when South Africa is in the throes of transition, ideologies in the educational, medical, economic and social spheres are being redefined and redirected. The field of speech pathology and audiology is no exception. The Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology, University of the Witwatersrand has acknowledged an urgent need to address the requirements of a multilingual and multicultural South Africa and extend training beyond the white middle‐class population. It is the responsibility of the training institutions to redirect the objectives of their curricula in order to meet these needs. This paper describes the changes introduced by the Department. These include teaching of community work principles and primary health care to the speech and hearing therapist, and the training of personnel for an alternative form of service, such as the community speech and hearing worker (CSHW) and the community‐based rehabilitation worker (CBRW). Au moment où l'Afrique du Sud est aux prises avec la transition, l'on observe, d'un point de vue idéologique, une redéfinition et un changement de direction dans les domaines éducatif, médical, économique et social. Ceci n'épargne pas les champs de la pathologie due langage et de l'audiologie. Le Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology de l'Université du Witwatersrand reconnaît les besoin urgent de s'occuper des besoins d'une Afrique du Sud plurilingue et pluriculturelle et d'assurer l'entraînement dans un domaine plus large que celui de la population blanche de classe moyenne. Il incombe aux instituts de formation de réviser les objectifs de leurs programmes d'enseignement pour répondre à ces besoins. Cet article décrit les changements apportés par le Département, qui comprennent l'enseignment au thérapeute des troubles de la parole et de l'audition des principes du travail dans les collectivités et de l'administration des soins de base, et l'entraînement du personnel en vue d'un type de service différent, tel que celui du thérapeute communautaire des troubles de la parole et de l'audition et du spécialiste communautaire en matière de réhabilitation. Die Sprachpathologie und die Audiologie sind keine Ausnahme. Die Abteilung Sprachpathologie und Audiologie an der Universität Witwatersrand hat die dringende Notwendigkeit anerkannt, die Bedürfnisse eines multisprachlichen und multikulturellen Südafrikas zu berücksichtigen und die Ausbildung über die weiße Mittelschicht hinaus auszudehnen. Es ist die Pflicht der Ausbildungsstätten, ihre Lehrziele umzustellen, um diese Bedürfnisse zu erfüllen. In diesem Aufsatz werden die Änderungen beschrieben, die die Abteilung eingeführt hat. Hierzu gehören Kurse für Sprachtherapeuten in den Grundsätzen der Gemeinschaftsarbeit und der primären Gesundheitspflege sowie die Ausbildung zu anderen Formen therapeutischen Dienstes, wie z.B. Gemeinde‐Sprech‐und‐Hör‐TherapeutIn und RehabilitationsarbeiterIn in der Gemeinde.
