Eastwood advocates the use of ‘qualitative research’ as a methodology which may help speech pathology find a research paradigm. This paper supports the utility of qualitative methods in general, outlines some of the safeguards required to rebut the charge that such methods may be subjective and therefore unscientific, indicates some of the kinds of uses to which qualitative research may be put, and suggests further reading for those interested in using qualitative methods.
