Summary The reading and spelling abilities of two groups of speech disordered children were compared with matched controls. Children with developmental verbal dyspraxia differed qualitatively as well as quantitatively from normal children and cleft palate children. A specific problem with grapheme‐phoneme conversion rules is postulated for dyspraxic children and implications are discussed.
