Summary The use of the XEL technique has been demonstrated as a useful tool to describe the physical concomitants of dysphonia. The technique is an excellent complement to current conventional techniques such as laryngoscopy in the diagnosis of individual patients. With the assistance of those experienced in the analysis of the XEL images, therapists can use the information gained to explain both diagnosis and the rationale of therapy, and thus help patients to change their dysphonic pattern. Extension of the XEL technique to the study of larger patient groups should add to the understanding of the mechanisms of dysphonia and its remediation.
