Research in the field of communication disorders requires that substantial population groups be used in order to study the inter‐ and intra‐ relationships of factors pertaining to specific disorders. The conceptualization, design and development of schedules for a computer‐based information retrieval programme is described. This programme creates a data bank which can be used by research workers. The programme consists of a detailed case history and basic functions schedule for recording data from cases having any form of communication disorder, and separate schedules on the symptomatology for each disorder. Schedules for articulatory/phonological disorders, stuttering and child language are described. The use of the computerized schedules in a university training speech and hearing clinic results in significantly improved student clinical appraisals and can be valuable teaching tools in formal classes. Aspects covering the organization, administration and the computer programme are outlined.
