Summary Of 65 stammerers undergoing intensive group therapy, 21 used syllable‐timed speech as their control technique, while 44 used prolonged speech. The first group only achieved 20% improvement at the six month reassessment. The second group reached 61% improvement. Of the prolonged speech group 19 undertook regular follow‐up therapy after the course and their improvement scores showed a mean of 86%. Assessment procedures are discussed in relation to prediction of outcome and suggestions made for further developments in therapy in the light of the results.
