An understanding of psycholinguistic principles is important for the aphasia therapist. Studies supporting the hypothesis of Chomsky that aphasics have competence but suffer a disruption of performance are cited. The use of some linguistic concepts such as word frequency, linguistic levels, abstractness and association are considered from the point of view of stimulation therapy and indices of recovery.
