Two‐dimensional ultrasound in combinaton with a pulsed Doppler may be used during parturition to distinguish between the various causes of fetal heart decelerations during active labor: “placental insufficiency”, umbilical cord compression, and, fetal head compression. One case of umbilical cord compression is presented to illustrate the possibilities.
