. The choice between urine and serum/plasma estriol assays in obstetric practice is still a matter of discussion and the advantages and disadvantages of the different sampling techniques are well known. Concerning serum analysis, frequent venipuncture may be uncomfortable for some patients and in certain cases venous blood samples are difficult to obtain. In such cases capillary blood collected from the finger tip may be an alternative to blood sampling. Excellent correlations between values obtained in venous and capillary blood have recently been demonstrated for unconjugated immunoreactive estrogens (estradiol‐17β3 + estrone) by Sankolli et al. (4) and for unconjugated estriol by Axelsson and co‐workers (1). In obstetric practice, determination of total (conjugated + unconjugated) estriol is used at least as frequently as determination of the unconjugated steroid. We therefore considered it of interest to evaluate the capillary sampling technique for this steroid. Since a comparison between capillary blood and urinary estrogen values does not seem to have been reported, such a comparison was included in the study.
