Percutaneous nephropyelostomy as a therapeutic method in postrenal obstruction is evaluated in a series of 44 cases. 12 of the patients had been treated for carcinoma of the cervix uteri by Wertheim's operation. 10 patients had ureteric stones with or without enclosed pyelitis. 11 patients had progressive uremia due to inoperable cancer of the pelvis with stenosed ureters. To relieve the obstruction the renal pelvis was drained for a long period of time and this maintained or improved renal function until the optimal time for definitive treatment was reached. The operation allowed repeated antegrade pyelography, and in some cases split function, to be performed. Thus the effect of the therapy could be checked repeatedly. Though we consider that the method should, as a rule, be used only temporarily, it may be used for up to 7 months as shown in Table III. The investigations cover the period 1966 to 1971.
