This article is devoted to the problem of professional abilities from the position of structural-functional approach. The following questions are considered: how professional abilities provide the productivity of activity; how the development of professional skills is carried out; what is the dependence of the specific structure of abilities and spontaneous and purposeful development in non-standard activity conditions. The study was conducted on a sample of 36 qualified railway drivers using a specialized simulator. The psychological analysis of the activity revealed seven abilities ensuring the implementation of the activity. Based on empirical data, it is shown that groups with spontaneous and purposeful development of abilities have statistically significant differences in the productivity of activity that were carried out in non-standard conditions and requirements. And these differences are in favor of the group with spontaneous development of abilities. It was proved that various structures of abilities are formed depending on their spontaneous and purposeful development, and that these structures of abilities provide the development of a new way of action by the subject in individual measure of integration.
