The article substantiates and illustrates that epistemology, the doctrine of social and humanitarian knowledge and subject, which is less abstract than gnoseology, was created both in Europe and in Russia, starting from the late 19th - early 20th centuries. This is confirmed by research on the specific ideas and works of E. Cassirer, C. Mannheim, and also P.L. Lavrov, N.K. Mikhailovsky, S.N. Bulgakov, S.L. Frank.
