Theoretical issues of formation and functioning of religious tourism as a modern research trend are considered. The literature sources are surveyed, the analysis of religious tourism problems in geography is made as well as the understanding of the discipline by Ukrainian, Polish, and Russian scientists. The functions of religious tourism, which have social, humanitarian, or economic character, are defined. The priority tasks of theoretical and methodological character are delineated.
