There are major developments taking place around the globeaffecting Pakistan and the region. Pakistan is dealing with varioussocial, cultural and security issues on its internal side. On the otherhand, the dynamics of globalisation are also having an impact offeringboth challenges and opportunities. Taking into consideration the needfor an expert discussion on such issues facing Pakistan, the IslamabadPolicy Research Institute held a seminar on “Pakistan and ChangingScenario: Regional and Global”. This book contains the researchpresented in this seminar and is divided into six chapters. The firstchapter in its first paper on “Education in Pakistan: HistoricalPerspective” reviews various education policies starting withQuaid-i-Azam’s views on education then discusses financing in educationand current data on education. The common factors in all these policieswere Islamic values, universal primary education, technical education, quality education and national unity. However there was less success inachieving the goals like the integration of madrassa education withmainstream education, the removal of the class barrier between Englishand Urdu medium students, bridging the rural-urban areas gap andreaching a hundred percent literacy rate.
