The paper looks into the causes behind various ethnicmovements in Pakistan and finds that these identity movements do notstem from primordial collective bonds. Rather, they originate from amotivation to promote specific interests, political as well associo-economic. Centralisation of the state is an additional factorcontributing to the ethnic tensions in the country as it leads to astrong feeling of vulnerability among the smaller groups.
