Political economy is the systematic study of the interactionbetween the political and the economic. As such, political economyimposes a heavy burden on it s practitioners: conscious attention to thevery real advances of political science and economics. Political economyshould not be treated as an open invitation to bad analysis in the nameof cross-disciplinary effort. Sadly, it is often taken for just such aninvitation and the book under review here is a good example. Adams andIqbal propose to present a political- economic analysis of Pakistan'seconomic development with particular emphasis on export policy. Such astudy may have two rather different constituencies: country specialistsand/or development and political economy generalists. The former isclearly not the case. The political analysis derives almost entirelyfrom existing secondary sources and the economic discussion istheoretical, ad hoc and based on readily available data. Thus we maypresume that the contribution is to be found in the particulartheoretical or methodological app roach and, therefore, of interest togeneralists as well as specialists.
