The paper is concerned with two theories that proport toexplain fertility variations In developing countries. The first of thesetheories is based on supply or natural fertility considerations whilethe second looks to (the underlying) costs and benefits of children asone Source explanation for fertility differences. These theoriesindicate that demand consideration do explain some of the systematicvariation in fertility even among "noncontracepting" populations.
