An assessment of production possibilities in the agriculturalsector is an important aspect of the process of making projections ofagricultural output. A knowledge of the determinants of production or ofsources of growth as observed in the recent past is a useful startingpoint in delineating the production possibilities. Locating sources ofgrowth in agriculture is normally interpreted as an exercise indetermining dimensions of the input-output relationship in cropproduction processes. There are mainly two approaches for analysing theissue: (a) Estimation of the production functions and (b) Disaggregationof the "gross value of production" (GVP) into its main components. Thispaper pre¬sents some results on sources of growth at the disaggregateddistrict level by breaking down the increase in the gross value ofproduction into four factors. The first section consists of themethodology and data used. Main results are presented in the secondsection. The last section derives some implications for research in thisarea.
