"Tales of Two City-States: The Development Progress ofHongkong and Singapore," is the third in a series of studies, sponsoredby the Committee on Overseas Development, examining successes innational development efforts. The previous two studies in the seriesdealt with Latin American Nations. This book, under review, examines theprogress, policies and pros¬pects of Hongkong and Singapore. BothHongkong and Singapore, until the end of World War II, were basicallycommercial centers carrying on a number of essential distributive,financial, transportation and communication functions linking East Asianand world markets. Since World War II, these two city-states havetransformed themselves into successful manufacturing centres with risingreal income and employment now second only to Japan in Asia.
