The patterns of shifting of population from the stage of beingsingle to being married by age and sex are of great demographicimportance because of their significant role in determining thepopulation composition and growth through family formation andfertility. The proportions of population getting married at differentages are of importance for the population planning pro¬gramme since onlymarried persons can be the potential producers of children in a societylike Pakistan where illegitimate fertility is almost non-existant. Suchproportions have also important bearings on social and economiccharac¬teristics like school attendance and labour force participationparticularly of females. The trend in the number of marriages hasimportant implications for housing programmes, community planning andfor the enterprises like insurance companies who are concerned withproviding life and health insurance of the married couples.
