Sweet Anticipation is partially devoted to explaining why listeners have a positive response to music that they can successfully predict. The book also presents evidence that the pleasure felt when expectations are met is especially great when these expectations are unconscious. I give examples from popular and classical music of consciously and unconsciously recognizable material and explore what Huron’s findings might mean to composers.
