ABSTRACT Worshipped, but misunderstood. The meaning of the value of p. The value of p indicates the probability of obtaining a value as extreme or more than that observed, based on the assumption of the equality of effect that marks the null hypothesis. However, it is common to misunderstand this value, giving interpretations to the value of p that have little to do with its real meaning. We review the meaning of the value of p and some of its most frequent misinterpretations.
