Igreja e escravidão nas constituições do Arcebispado da Bahia de 1707

As Constituições Primeiras do Arcebispado da Bahia foram geradas a partir do sínodo de 1707, iniciativa do arcebispo Dom Sebastião Monteiro da Vide, e representam um intento de adaptação da Igreja às condições do Brasil, entre elas a presença da escravidão. Até o século XIX elas foram a grande referência canônica e pastoral da hierarquia da Igreja no Brasil. Este artigo localiza nos cinco livros das Constituições as considerações referentes aos escravos, contextualiza-as, aponta algumas de suas fontes e propõe uma interpretação.Abstract: The First Constitutions of the Bahian Archbishophood began at the 1707 synod, an initiative of the Archbishop Dom Sebastião Monteiro da Vide, and represent an attempt on the part of the Church to adapt itself to the Brazilian conditions, among them the presence of slavery. Until the 19th century they were the main canonical and pastoral reference for the Church’s hierarchy in Brazil. This article seeks in the five books of the Constitutions the considerations about the slaves, contextualizes them, points to some of their sources and proposes an interpretation.
