The purpose of this article is to analyze the concepts of the “federal district”, “macro-region”, to identify their constitutional legal aspect and the validity of their existence in the legal system of Russia. The author attempts to bring terminological clarity to the concept of the federal district and to implement its relationship with the concept of the macro-region through their similarity and legal connection. In the course of the study, the author makes a conclusion about the similarity of both concepts, and also points out the legal gaps in determining the place of federal districts in the legal system, the ambiguity of their status and the legal force of the acts regulating this institution.
