On 07 May 2009, EFSA issued a statement on the potential risk for public health due to the presence of nicotine in wild mushrooms. Questions about this statement of EFSA were raised by the Chinese authorities. This position was further clarified by means of a letter to the European Commission. The European Commission requested EFSA to provide technical input in reply to the letter from the Chinese authorities. The comments raised by the Chinese authorities mainly related to the establishment of an acute reference dose (ARfD) of 0.0008 mg/kg body weight (b.w.) per day for nicotine by EFSA. Comments of the Chinese authorities were considered by EFSA and further clarifications explaining the rationale behind the toxicological assessment and the ARfD for nicotine are provided. EFSA hereby confirms the previously established ARfD of 0.0008 mg/kg b.w. per day for nicotine.
