This issue of the Journal of Oceanological Research contains articles prepared by the authors on the basis of scientific reports presented at the International Round table: “The Future of the Caspian. Scientific projects and investigations”, which was held at the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of Russian Academy of Sciences from November 28 to 29, 2018. The main objective of the Round table was to attract the attention of the scientific community and the general public to the study of the processes occurring in the Caspian Sea in the process of active economic activity, anthropogenic effects on the water balance of the sea, extreme events under the influence of climatic changes, as a result of which there is a noticeable evolution on the small historical scale of the natural environment of the Caspian region. The identified issues of the state and development of the Caspian Sea under the conditions of global climate change will undoubtedly give a new impetus to the study of this important region and outline the directions for further research.
