After the adoption of the Law of Ukraine “On Higher Education” (2014), the academic community has been focusing on the peculiarities of a competent approach to creation and implementation of new educational programs, which receives a continuation in development of curricula in the higher education institutions. When rendering the concept “competence” and “competency”, many scholars tend to think that according to the principle of a thesaurus one should use “competence” as a broad and general concept, and “competency” as a more narrow and precise one that means knowledge and skills. The article represents interpretation of the concept “competence” and “competency”. It introduces the professional disciplines that form communication competence of the future specialists of information, library and archives sciences on the speciality 029, that are provided by the bachelor and master educational programs of Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University. Formation of communication competences of higher education graduates can be considered both at different levels of their training, and within different subject areas and specialties. There is common feature that due to competences the professional potential of future communication professionals is established and developed, transforming into training outcomes.
