This article examines the extent to which women are paid less than men in New Zealand, making comparisons with the situation in Britain and America. In the course of the discussion, the immediate causes of differences between pay and some more underlying theories to account for them are briefly outlined. Consideration is then given to past and possible future policies which might help to increase relative female earnings and opportunity, together with a discussion of their desirabiliy.
