This article is a revision of a presentation given by the author at the Education Division Session during the 87th SLA Conference, June 9, 1997, in Seattle, Washington. lt presents an in-depth analysis of European educational libraries with a distinct emphasis on Germany. The historical development, the building of databases, educational networks and information systems, the production ofCD-ROMS, plus the broad range of library and research facilities and their services are examined in detail. Relevant lists of major European research institutions and the list of their abbreviations are provided in the appendices.
