The paper reviews issues concerning localization of administrative units known as tax collecting centers traditionally understood as cities or districts (volosts) of the Smolensk principality, such as Luchin and Zarub, known, in particular, from a set of documents of the Smolensk bishopric that includes the Charter of the prince Rostislav Mstislavich using comprehensive analysis of the documents from the Smolensk bishopric, data from chronicles, historical data from written and cartographic sources of the 15th 17th centuries and, to certain extent, archaeological data.
